October Coffee & Conversation
Many thanks to everyone who came to the first Coffee & Conversation at Le Matin de Paris Bakery in Annandale on September 12th.  In addition to the goodies and coffee, the group had great conversation, and ended the afternoon with a shopping expedition to the nearby New Seoul Department Store.
Chuseok has brought a number of activities you won't want to miss, so October's Coffee & Conversation will be a little different:
Come to either (or both!) of the great events below and connect with fellow KFers and members of the Korean American community.  Both are certain to be great fun:
KUMCGW, the church that co-sponsors our annual Lunar New Year celebration, is holding a fall bazaar from 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, October 17th.  Look for KFers at 11:30 near the refreshments.

The Korean Heritage Foundation and new organization ASIA Inc. (All Services for International Adoptees) invite families to a Chuseok celebration on Saturday, October 24th, from 4 to 6 PM.  RSVP is required - see below for details.
In November, Korean Focus hopes to schedule the "Coffee with Debbie Riley" that we won in the silent auction at the Center for Adoption Support and Education's benefit luncheon on September 13th.  More to follow when we have a date!

Experience rarely seen ceremonies of ancient Korean Buddhism, performed in full costume by the Young San Preservation Group from Korea. The ritualized dances, known as chakpop, are accompanied by , mesmerizing vocal chants that facilitate contemplation and spiritual growth. Musicians accompany the chants and dances on an array of traditional drums, cymbals, and gongs.

This event, presented in cooperation with the Korea Society and in conjunction with the
George Washington University Hahn Moo-Sook Colloquium in Korean Humanities, is co-sponsored by the university's Sigur Center for Asian Studies.

Derived from ancient Buddhist ceremonies that were nearly lost in history, the Young San Ceremony was preserved and revived by the Young San Preservation Group. Originally, the ceremony was an elaborate three-day event performed for the well-being of the nation both on joyful occasions and in times of disaster, with sacred chanting and dance in honor of Buddha and his message. These rituals, accompanied by drums cymbals, gongs, and chimes, are unique to Korea and were nominated for preservation as an Intangible Cultural Asset in 1973. Organized by the Korea Society, New York.

Typically Chusok is celebrated based on the lunar calendar.  This year Chusok is actually on October 3.   We are celebrating it this year between Korean and American Thanksgiving. It is a free event. We would like to offer this special event annually starting from this year.  If you have preschoolers or school-aged children, it will be fun for them to come and enjoy how to make songpyon (rice cake) and sample it.  But all age groups, birth siblings and grandparents are welcome, as well as waiting parents!  Programs will also include learning how to play a Korean traditional game yoot.  Korean dinner will be served at the end.

Korean Heritage Foundation has a long history of educating the public about Korean culture in Washington DC areas.  ASIA is a newly-formed non-profit organization, which provides educational programs and other services for international adoptees and adoptive families. ASIA is headed by Grace Song who used to serve an adoption agency called Adoption Service Information Agency, also ASIA, and currently CHSFS as a post adoption social worker.
